Gerald Kingsland, a middle‑aged man, advertises in a London paper for a 20‑30‑year‑old woman to spend a year with him on a deserted tropical island. Lucy Irving answers, and after a few meetings they set out. The island proves far from idyllic, and Lucy’s resolve and strength become the key to surviving the grueling year.
