In early‑morning Prague, the body of safe‑breaker Toufar is discovered floating in the Vltava with a knife in his back. Police interview his lover, prostitute Anna “Umbrella” Kulatá, who denies any role. The prime suspect becomes her former boyfriend Penicka, another safe‑breaker who left the streets for her but was recently released from prison. The case is headed by Police Councilman Vacátko.
