Georges “Jojo” Castagnier, a teenage drifter, squats in a roof‑top room in Paris’s Pigalle district after fleeing a hostile step‑mother. He idolises neighbor Jenny Dorr, a nightclub dancer, but she becomes involved with Dicky, a lazy ex‑boxer. Jojo scrapes together money through odd jobs—selling magazines, posing for artists—until he finally finds a more age‑appropriate romance with neighbor Marietta, though desperation drives him to a suicide attempt.
