In 1946 ethnographic filmmaker Jean Rouch set out to record a “Bangaoui,” a traditional hippopotamus hunt on the Niger River, but his footage proved unsatisfactory. Five years later he returns to the same river, devoting more time and resources to capture the hunt accurately and convey its cultural weight.
