In 1827, patrons at an inn in Nafplio celebrate the Navarino victory. Drunk, a hot‑tempered Arvanite misinterprets a Cretan’s dialect, thinks he’s been insulted and shoots him. Inspector Dionysios Fantes from the Ionian Islands arrives to interrogate the crowd, but none understand his language and he cannot understand theirs.
