His creations brilliantly mimic the styles of artists ranging from 15th-century masters to Picasso and Disney. Unusually, Landis didn't sell his forgeries; instead, he gave them away, often posing as a philanthropist, executor, or even a Jesuit priest, successfully deceiving museums nationwide. The scheme unraveled when determined registrar Matthew Leininger uncovered the ruse, forcing Landis to confront the repercussions and a wave of museum professionals questioning his elaborate charade.
