Set in a pre‑World War II Lithuanian town crowded with idle laborers and petty crooks, Adam is a naive dreamer without work. His only confidant, the Captain, is a weather‑worn sea veteran who spins tales of far‑off places like Singapore and Hawaii. Inspired, Adam gets a job at the emigration office, saves his wages, and plans his ticket abroad.
