Set in 1930s Sicily, Aurelio Grimaldi’s debut feature follows twelve‑year‑old Aclà, whom his impoverished parents sell into slavery at the Floristella sulfur mines. He works relentless hours from Monday to Saturday in the hot, candle‑lit tunnels, barely fed. Beaten, abused and threatened with rape by his overseer, Aclà hatches a desperate plan to flee to the sea.
