On vacation in Venice, Sylvester and Tweety share a sunlit caper as Tweety sits in a balcony cage and serenades with Santa Lucia while the canal glitters below. The cat watches from across the water, scheming and skirting the edge of mischief, as Tweety’s cheerful tune sets a playful mood for the day.
From the hotel balcony, Tweety’s song anchors a cascade of comic misadventures. Sylvester bolts outside with an open sandwich roll, plunges into the canal, and clambers back up only to fail at freeing a boat tied to a rope—he cuts the rope and the craft dumps him into the water again. He switches to an inflatable raft, but Tweety fires a slingshot and punctures it; the boat deflates, drifts back to the dock, and Sylvester yanks the ruined raft off his hindquarters in disgust.
A bold, Tarzan-style swing via a rope ends badly when Sylvester lands straight into the mouth of a hungry shark that resembles Dopey Dick from Rabbitson Crusoe. He whirls free and swims for safety, narrowly escaping the gnashing jaws as he darts away through the canal.
Desperation leads to a flying attempt: an electric fan and a balloon tied to his waist would carry him across, but he rises too high. Tweety’s steady aim again takes him down from the sky, and as he descends, the bathing cap on his head slips, sending him to land on the sidewalk beside Granny and Tweety’s hotel. He scrambles into the building but the elevator thrusts him back toward the water when the doors open on the wrong floor.
Granny and Tweety set off on a relaxing gondola ride along the canal, while Sylvester waits on a bridge with a fishing rod, trying to snag a passing speedboat. He pulls off a close call with a striped pole and then smashes into a low bridge marked by a goofy warning sign: “Ducka You Head, Lowla Bridgeada.” The day’s chase continues to its comic, chaotic crescendo.
Finally, as Sylvester dines on a plate of spaghetti, he hears Tweety singing again—Tweety is out of his cage this time—and hatches one more plan to catch the little bird. He hurls a long strand of spaghetti as a lasso, nearly trapping Tweety. The danger draws Granny into action once more, and she clutches the pasta noose and substitutes a mallet in Tweety’s place. As Sylvester sucks the spaghetti into his mouth, the mallet comes down squarely on his head, and a chorus of birds erupts with Tweety’s famous line:
I tawt I taw a puddy tat!
