The film adapts Ivan Turgenev’s novel, depicting Russian landed gentry in the 1840s as nobleman Lavretsky returns from Europe to his ancestral estate. Visiting his neighbors, the Kalitins, he meets Lisa, becomes infatuated, and abandons thoughts of his estranged wife in Paris, hoping only for a future with her, a woman unlike any he has known.
