In postwar 1949 Le Havre, dockworker Laurent loses his job and his marriage unravels as his wife Madeleine plans an affair with friend Jean Sauviot. When Laurent confronts Jean, he mistakenly kills an American sailor he thinks is Jean. Madeleine assumes Jean is responsible and hopes for a fresh start, while the police pursue a new truth.
