Ten years into their marriage, the wife is frustrated by her husband's lack of career progress, forcing her to work and forgo luxuries. He sees her as sloppy and harsh, criticizing her cooking and cleaning, and treats her like a servant. Their unhappy home is worsened by troublesome lodgers, and the husband becomes drawn to an ex‑colleague, a widowed mother seeking security, contemplating leaving his wife.
