Freddy, a Viennese Jew who fled to New York after Hitler’s invasion, and Adler, a left‑wing Berliner, return to Austria in 1944 as U.S. soldiers. Freddy falls for a Nazi’s daughter, while Adler tries to slip into the Communist zone. The Cold War and lingering anti‑semitism shatter their idealism, leaving them amid cynicism, opportunism and self‑deception.
