After his mother’s funeral at Islington Cemetery, while waiting for her ashes, London bank manager Henry Pulling, Alec McCowen, is drawn into a web of secrets when Augusta Bertram, Maggie Smith, declares that the woman who raised him was not his biological mother. Augusta invites him back to her apartment, where her lover, the enigmatic Zachary Wordsworth, Louis Gossett Jr., awaits. The moment shifts from polite civility to a provocative revelation as Augusta explains that Henry’s origin story is not what he was led to believe, and she pulls him into a journey that will test trust, family, and fortune.

A sudden package arrives, containing what is allegedly the severed finger of Augusta’s true love, Ercole Visconti, Robert Stephens, accompanied by a note promising a reunion only if a demand of $100,000 is met. The delivery sets a mark on the horizon as Augusta presses Henry to join her in Paris, insisting on the need to act quickly while the trail remains warm. Unbeknownst to him, she is Veering toward a dangerous arrangement, smuggling £50,000 out of England to Turkey for a gangster named Crowder, Robert Flemyng, in exchange for a lucrative ransom. The plan twines with a promise of adventure, and Henry’s curiosity begins to override his caution.

On the Orient Express, Henry runs into a free-spirited young American, Tooley, Cindy Williams, whose carefree charm and insistence on living in the moment pull him further from the safe, predictable life he’s known. In Milan, Augusta is greeted at the station by Visconti’s son, Mario, Raymond Gérôme, who hands her a bouquet—and an ear that supposedly belongs to Visconti—an eerie token that blurs the line between romance, deceit, and threat. The air around them grows tense as the chase for money and control tightens, and the shadow of Visconti’s planned masterstroke looms large.

When they reach the Turkish border, officials confiscate the money Augusta has been carrying, forcing her and Henry to retreat to Paris. Augusta then seeks funds from Achille Dambreuse, José Luis López Vázquez, the wealthy Frenchman who becomes a pivotal pivot in the plot; but Dambreuse dies of a heart attack in her hotel suite, leaving Augusta to improvise. She eventually claims a portrait of herself—allegedly painted by Amedeo Modigliani—from Dambreuse’s home, hoping to sell it to raise the money needed to salvage the arrangement and secure their future.

A raging argument uncovers a startling truth: Augusta’s confidant, and Henry’s supposed guardian, is not merely a companion but a key piece in a larger game. Augusta lets slip that Henry is Visconti’s “other son,” a revelation that reframes every prior exchange and motive. After the painting is sold to Crowder, the trio—Henry, Augusta, and Wordsworth—set out on a fishing boat toward North Africa to fulfill the ransom and recover Visconti. The sea voyage becomes a crucible in which trust is tested, loyalties shift, and the hidden calculations of every player come into focus.

Visconti’s intervention finally materializes as the mastermind reveals himself through a chilling display: his ear and finger remain intact, a symbolic confirmation that he has orchestrated the entire scheme to separate Augusta from her money. With the ransom secured, Visconti and his collaborators depart, leaving Henry to reckon with the truth he has unearthed: Augusta is his biological mother, a discovery that reshapes his sense of belonging. In a decisive moment, Henry reveals that he and Wordsworth swapped “neatly cut pages of the Barcelona telephone directory” for the package’s money, a cryptic gambit that undermines Visconti’s ploy and gives Henry a sliver of agency in the fallout.

Armed with the cash, Henry contemplates buying back the portrait of Augusta, yet she counters that she would rather spend the funds on more travels and new horizons. The unresolved tension culminates in a final, almost mythic touch: Henry decides the fate of the moment with a coin toss. Wordsworth, ever the unpredictable catalyst, tosses the coin, and the film closes on a freeze-frame of Augusta, Henry, and Wordsworth as they await the fall of the coin—and the next chapter of their intertwined fates.
