Two men, Nieminen and Varjola, rob a mail van. Varjola betrays him, shooting Nieminen and fleeing with the loot. Nieminen is arrested yet refuses to name his accomplice. On his first prison leave he finds Varjola, now mayor of a small town, and the shocked mayor recognises his old friend, reviving their tense past, in a surprising confrontation.
