What Happens in Three Summers: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Three Summers (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Over the span of three summers, Madá (played by Regina Casé), who works as a housekeeper in a luxurious villa located in an upscale coastal town in Brazil, showcases her cleverness and keen instincts as she navigates through turbulent times. When her employers, Edgar (portrayed by Otávio Müller) and Marta (played by Gisele Fróes), become embroiled in significant corruption scandals, the villa is left abandoned, leaving Madá and her fellow employees in a lurch without their wages.

In 2015, Madá nurtures a dream of establishing a roadside kiosk, and to help her vision come to life, Edgar provides her with funds to secure a parcel of land. However, the situation swiftly deteriorates for the owners in 2016 as law enforcement apprehends them, uncovering damning evidence of fraudulent activities including bogus accounts and transactions. To compound the issue, it comes to light that Edgar had been misusing Madá’s identity to acquire illicit cellphone numbers.

Fueled by her resourcefulness, Madá orchestrates a sale of the owners’ extravagant items—ranging from designer shoes and clothing to exquisite statues—to compensate her fellow helpers, who briefly relish in the luxurious experiences the villa has to offer, from swimming pool extravaganzas to champagne indulgences. During this chaotic time, she allies with Mr. Lira (played by Rogério Fróes), the father of Edgar, who is temporarily residing in the villa while his own apartment in Copacabana undergoes renovations. Together, they seize the opportunity to advertise the villa for short-term rentals, attracting a film crew that welcomes Madá into their production, a venture that allows her to share glimpses of her own challenging life.

As part of her new endeavors, she takes tourists on outings aboard the family’s opulent yacht, offering insights into the lives of the wealthy, the celebrated, and even the infamous in the area. In her relationship with Mr. Lira, who faces his own struggles as he relies on a wheelchair, Madá discovers a compassionate ally, especially considering Mr. Lira’s shame over his son's misdeeds.

By the third summer in 2017, the narrative shifts as Edgar is set to face house arrest at the property while Marta, unable to cope with the unfolding circumstances, has departed. Madá and the other staff members prepare for the inevitable departure from the villa. However, fortune smiles upon Madá when Mr. Lira unexpectedly passes away, bequeathing his Copacabana apartment to her instead of his own family. As the New Year approaches, Madá and her friends gather to celebrate from the comforts of her new apartment, a stone's throw away from the famous beach, ready to embrace the future with hope and newfound opportunities.

Three Summers Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Three Summers (2019): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Mr. Lira leave his Copacabana apartment to Madá instead of his family?

In Three Summers, Mr. Lira had grown deeply attached to Madá through their shared time at the villa, where he came to view her as a more dependable and caring presence than his own son Edgar. Haunted by shame over his son's corrupt dealings, he chose to reward Madá's loyalty and resourcefulness by bequeathing the apartment directly to her.

Foreshadowing: Their early bond is hinted at when Mr. Lira and Madá team up to advertise the villa for short-term rentals.

Q2

What did Edgar do with Madá's identity?

Edgar misused Madá's personal information to acquire illegal cellphone numbers as part of his larger corruption scheme. This betrayal was uncovered during the 2016 police investigation and turned Madá from a trusted employee into an unwitting accomplice in his fraud.

Q3

Why did Madá start selling the villa's luxury items?

After Edgar and Marta's arrest left the household staff unpaid, Madá organized a sale of the owners' designer clothes, shoes, and statues to compensate her fellow workers. The move was both practical and symbolic, briefly allowing the staff to enjoy the villa's pool and champagne before the property was abandoned.

How did the film crew end up at the villa?

Q5

Why did Marta leave Edgar before his house arrest?

What happened to Madá's dream of opening a roadside kiosk?

In 2015, Edgar had provided Madá with funds to buy a parcel of land for her kiosk, but the corruption scandal derailed her plans before the business could be built. Q7

Why did Mr. Lira ally with Madá instead of supporting his own son?

Mr. Lira was consumed by shame over Edgar's fraudulent behavior and felt little remaining loyalty to his family. Confined to a wheelchair and living in the villa during renovations, he found a more compassionate partner in Madá, and together they converted the crisis into opportunity through short-term rentals and other ventures.

Q10

Why was Edgar placed under house arrest at the villa specifically?

What role does Mr. Lira's death play in Madá's story?

Mr. Lira's unexpected passing late in 2017 is the pivotal event that allows him to leave his Copacabana apartment to Madá. Without his death, Madá would have had to leave the villa empty-handed; instead, the inheritance secures her a future near one of Brazil's most famous beaches and a hopeful new beginning.

Foreshadowing: Mr. Lira's declining mobility and his deepening bond with Madá hint that his time is limited.
