Set on Jeju Island in the late 19th century, the spread of Catholicism threatens the entrenched Confucian community, whose influence wanes under higher taxes imposed by pro‑Catholic officials. Tensions erupt into a brief religious war, with a Confucian militia slaughtering hundreds of Christians. The film follows Yi Jae‑su, a young man who rises to command the rebel forces, portraying the events that lead to the brutal uprising.
