A refined, melancholy young woman marries a caring physician who adores her, yet she feels only affection. Unintentionally she falls for poet‑performer Pedro Abrunhosa, who reciprocates. She confides in a nun friend and later her husband. Jealousy consumes the husband, who wastes away; after his death she can marry Pedro, but her decisions and explanations, especially to the cloistered friend, form the film’s core, contrasted with convent life and Abrunhosa’s stage presence.
