After his proposal to study infant mortality is rejected, Dr. Schmith arranges with an escape agency to flee East Germany, hoping for a senior role at a West German children’s hospital. When the project is unexpectedly approved and he is asked to head the GDR section, his plans unravel. He also falls for his new colleague Katharina, while the agency threatens blackmail, turning his situation increasingly deadly.
