The 1938 classic, adapted from Oscar Braaten’s play, follows factory worker Milja (Eva Sletto) and her unfaithful boyfriend Julius (Harald Heide Steen). Their happy life shatters when the temptress Petrina lures Julius into drinking and theft, leaving Milja alone with shame and an illegitimate child. The baby is placed with Hønse‑Lovisa while Milja continues working. A doctor, hunting children to adopt for affluent west‑side families, tempts Milja to give up the child for a better life. Hønse‑Lovisa reminds her that love and care can never be replaced by material comforts.
