Professor Griggs, an underpaid college instructor, lives next to prosperous shoemaker Olsen, who has plenty of food and money while the Griggs family struggles. Rich student Phil West falls for Griggs' daughter Amelia and befriends the poor Reverend Gates, also smitten with her. Seeing the divide, Phil tries to bridge the gap between their worlds.
