An American gunslinger murders a Mexican man in California immediately after the Mexican‑American War. He is arrested and put on trial for murder, while the local Hispanic community watches anxiously, hoping to see how American justice will be applied. Both the perpetrator and the legal system are depicted as young enough that they cannot yet vote.
