The Wilderness (2025) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

When Miles attempts his escape, Ed hesitates and watches his friend disappear into the darkness. James, convinced something is wrong, orders a search despite a raging storm. The group learns from Levi that a former participant named Andy once escaped, but James never found him. The search ends with Miles found, badly injured after falling into a ditch. James brings the boys to a small settlement where they finally sleep in real beds and encounter other teenagers, including girls, giving them a brief taste of normal life.

After a short respite, the group is forced back to the program. James tells Ed that his “healing” is complete and that he will soon be sent home. In the quiet of the night, Miles, broken by the relentless abuse and unable to flee, writes a note for Ed exposing James’s cruelty and then takes his own life, slashing his wrist. The note becomes Ed’s catalyst: he hands it over to the police, ensuring James is held accountable.

The film ends with Ed, now aware of the true horror behind the program and burdened by Miles’s sacrifice, leaving the desert behind. He carries the weight of the experience but also the possibility of a future free from the cycle that once trapped his family.
