A young magician with an unconventional look lands his first big break, then faces a villainous rival. The Magic Show is a one‑act musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Bob Randall, starring magician Doug Henning. Produced by Edgar Lansbury, it opened May 28 1974 at New York’s Cort Theatre, ran 1,920 performances and closed Dec 31 1978. Henning earned a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor and director Grover Dale was nominated for Best Direction. A 2001 DVD captures a 1980 filmed version directed by Norman Campbell at Toronto’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre, featuring Henning again and Didi Conn as Cal, though several key songs were omitted.
