A lonely widower living in the city's Italian quarter finds his only comfort after his wife's death in his young child. He is reluctantly drawn into a secret society of fellow Italians, who, after observing the wealth of another community member, demand $5,000 ostensibly for their expenses. When the widower refuses, the society orders his murder, selecting him as the one to carry out the killing.
