Six months after encountering a peculiar and radioactive mist, Scott Carey begins to undergo a bizarre transformation—he starts to shrink in size. What follows is a journey filled with challenges, bewilderment, and a hint of horror, as he navigates the difficulties not only posed by his changing body but also from those around him, including his frustrated feline, and an unexpected encounter with danger.
The story begins with a gentle narration by Grant Williams, who plays Scott. He reflects on the extraordinary saga of his life, taking us back to that seemingly ordinary summer day—the day that altered everything for him. On a leisurely outing aboard his brother’s boat with his wife, Louise (Randy Stuart), an ominous patch of fog envelops him, leaving a lasting and strange impact on his body.
Fast forward six months, and the morning routine has become a harbinger of confusion. The milkman arrives, but things are amiss at the Carey house. Scott’s clothes hang loosely on him, triggering a panic that leads him to seek medical help from Dr. Arthur Bramson (William Schallert). The doctor, puzzled, assures Scott that “People just don’t get shorter.” Yet, the truth is undeniable; Scott is diminishing in stature. Each visit reveals more distressing news, leading to consultations with Dr. Thomas Silver (Raymond Bailey), who uncovers the shocking dual exposures Scott faced: first the insecticide truck, and then the mysterious mist.
As Scott’s condition worsens, tensions rise between him and Louise, threatening the strength of their marriage. After a series of unfortunate events lead them to financial ruin and a slew of intrusive reporters, Scott begins documenting his ordeal in a journal, which becomes an outlet for his deteriorating mental state. He finds solace in a chance meeting with Clarice Bruce (April Kent), who empathizes with his plight. However, he soon realizes that his shrinking is becoming more pronounced, culminating in a harrowing incident where he encounters danger in the form of Butch, their cat.
What follows is a maelstrom of survival. As Scott finds himself smaller than ever, he must fend off not only isolating despair but also a spider, which comes to symbolize all that threatens his existence. In a fight for survival, Scott’s ingenuity shines through as he constructs tools out of everyday objects, facing his adversary with desperation and tenacity. He meticulously plans to secure food and escape what feels like a nightmare.
Meanwhile, Louise grapples with her own grief and confusion, eventually concluding that her husband is gone, leaving her to deal with the aftermath alone. Yet, unbeknownst to her, Scott remains alive—trapped in the confines of a world that now seems impossibly vast. His journey becomes one of philosophical reflection, as he narrows his focus from survival to seeking out purpose.
As the story progresses, each encounter leads him closer to a poignant realization; even in his smallest form, he has not lost hope. In a powerful climax, he emerges victorious over his foe, reclaiming not just his will to survive, but also a sense of belonging in an otherworldly reality. The film concludes on a note of redemption, with Scott contemplating the universe and his place within it, ultimately sharing a message of endurance: “To God there is no zero. I still exist.”
