Ending explained
What Happens at the End of The Here After?
How The Here After (2017) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
The ending of The Here After presents a poignant message about guilt, forgiveness, and the possibility of spiritual salvation. After Robin's apparent death and subsequent revival, it’s revealed that she was possessed by the spirit of Rose, her sister who had drowned in the water during the accident that also claimed Claire’s other daughter. When Claire, overwhelmed by grief and guilt, decides to try to bring Robin back from the "here after," she undergoes a dangerous ritual, immersing herself in ice water and taking pills to induce hypothermia. This act transports her to a liminal space—a kind of afterlife—where she encounters her own past and the spirits of her daughters. In this realm, Claire reunites with Rose's spirit, symbolically embracing her to accept her loss. Rose’s presence in this space suggests that her spirit had been trapped due to the unresolved guilt and trauma Claire carried. As mother and daughter finally acknowledge and make peace with Rose’s death, Rose’s soul is freed to move on.
Meanwhile, Robin, who appears to have inherited Rose's spirit, now exhibits behaviors and talents that align more with Rose's personality—like playing the piano and acting more childlike. The reflection on the piano at the end hints that Robin might still be possessed by Rose, or perhaps that the two spirits have merged within her, with Rose helping Robin to navigate the world and keep her alive in memory. The ambiguous ending leaves it open whether Robin truly returned from the afterlife or is still inhabited by Rose’s spirit. Nevertheless, Claire’s journey concludes with acceptance, suggesting that letting go of guilt and forgiving oneself can lead to peace—for the living and the departed alike. In the end, it seems that through understanding and love, the spirits find their way to rest, freeing the characters from the shadows of the past.
