Busuioc, a wealthy peasant from Curtici, sends his son Iorgovan and the servant Sofron to a neighboring village to recruit labor for the fields. Iorgovan falls for Simina, a poor mountain farmer’s daughter, and she reciprocates, joining the harvest with her father. Torn between sincere love and the barrier of social class, Iorgovan struggles, while Sofron also becomes enamored with Simina, intensifying the rivalry and exposing each man's true motives toward the woman they both cherish.
