When a group of peasants petitions Leo Tolstoy and his Countess wife for land, Tolstoy must tell them that his wife controls the estate and refuses their request. Their rebuff spurs him to obsess over the plight of the poor, igniting repeated arguments with his wife and sinking him into deep despondency as he futilely seeks answers to the suffering around him.
