In Recife, lawyer Dr. Paulo has a daughter, Heloísa, with his lover while living in the countryside. Before leaving for Europe he asks a friend to bring her to the city. There his reckless son Helvécio, unaware she is his sister, tries to rape her and is killed by Heloísa in self‑defence. She is arrested and tried without evidence proving she acted to protect her honour.
