Michiko Oshitani is found strangled in a Tokyo apartment, and the building's owner, Mutsuo Koshikawa, disappears. Detectives, including Yuhei Matsumiya, a cousin of Detective Kyoichiro Kaga, struggle to find a link between the victim and the missing man. Their investigation reveals Michiko had traveled to Tokyo to visit Hiromi Asai, a former classmate. A puzzling clue found near the body—a list of twelve bridges near Nihonbashi—agitates Kaga, hinting at a deeper, personal connection to the case and his late mother.
