Part of the early German artificial‑creature series that includes Der Golem, Alraune and Metropolis, Homunculus follows the laboratory‑created being Foenss, fashioned by Kuehne. When Foenss learns he lacks a soul and cannot love, he turns against humanity, inciting revolts and ruling as a beautiful yet monstrous tyrant, while his creator‑father pursues him to rectify his mistake.
