Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t

In the sprawling campus of Kyoritsu University, the everyday hustle of lectures and part‑time jobs is given a wildly absurd twist by a sport that seems ripped from a cartoon: collegiate sumo, complete with oversized underpants and a reverence for tradition that collides with modern student life. When Shuhei Yamamoto discovers a shortfall in the credits he needs to graduate, Professor Tokichi Anayama offers an unlikely bargain—participate in the university’s sumo tournament and the missing credits might be forgiven. Intrigued and cornered, Shuhei steps into a world he never imagined, where the stakes are as much about personal pride as they are about academic survival.

The sumo club itself is a ragtag assembly of characters as colorful as the sport they practice. Natsuko Kawamura, a determined graduate student who runs the club, recruits Shuhei with a mix of earnest ambition and mischievous charm. The lone veteran of the team, Aoki Tomio, a classicist who has dedicated years to the dohyo, embodies the stubborn tradition the club clings to. Joining them are Hosaku Tanaka, a larger‑than‑life presence whose confidence rivals his size, and Shuhei’s younger brother Haruo Yamamoto, whose enthusiasm adds a familial spark. Even a foreign student, George Smiley, arrives with a football background and a willingness to help with rent, while Masako Mamiya, a spirited manager harboring a secret crush, brings unconventional energy to the mix.

Together they must confront the looming threat of a rival team that could spell disgrace and disbandment for the club. The film balances slapstick humor—think wild training sessions and comically oversized loincloths—with a genuine affection for the underdog spirit that drives each misfit toward a common goal.
