Maria, a skilled executive secretary, lives with her sister Anna, who is battling academic pressure, brooding, taking pills and keeping a diary. When Maria begins a romance with Maurice, her boss’s son, Anna’s drastic, selfish act pushes Maria into isolation. Maria later forms a close bond with Miriam, a typist who becomes a surrogate younger sister, while she struggles with her intrusive tendencies and a past that haunts her.
