Roberto Santini finally pieces together the night Maria Spezi was assaulted. The surveillance tapes that should have proved everything have been erased, but Roberto knows that the real perpetrator is the town’s powerful politician, Curzio Pilati. Pilati, crippled by an obsessive fear of contamination, cannot tolerate physical contact; instead he watches women through hidden cameras and forces his henchman Dario Nobile to bring them to his villa. When Pilati tries to push the boundary with Maria, he drugs her coffee, orders Dario to have his way with her, and, after Dario walks away, Pilati’s phobia drives him to brutally assault her himself. Dario later testifies, confirming Pilati’s culpability.
The tragedy is compounded by the fate of Roberto’s own family. Years earlier, their daughter Angela was mistakenly thought to have been assaulted by Walter Spezi, a drunk former technician, when in fact she had merely witnessed him urinating behind a carousel. The misunderstanding led to Walter’s dismissal and eventual death at the hands of police, an event that haunts Roberto. Angela, meanwhile, has been quietly involved with Stefano Tommasi, the English professor who, though not a monster, has been complicit in Pilati’s schemes for the sake of money and a promised biography.
With the truth finally clear, Roberto decides to end his strained marriage to Claudia—who had been blinded by Pilati’s generosity and never suspected him—and moves in with Elena. In a desperate act of reckoning, he recreates the missing footage, editing together a version that implicates Pilati even though the original recording no longer exists. He triggers alarms throughout the seaside town and broadcasts the fabricated video onto every household screen, forcing the residents to confront the horror that has lurked behind their polished façades.
The town, previously insulated within its own “fortresses,” is jolted into a collective grief and a rare moment of honesty. Roberto’s final message underscores the irony: only in the wake of tragedy do people step out of their safe bubbles to share fear and sorrow. The film closes on this uneasy solidarity, leaving the audience to ponder how easily privilege can hide brutality and how fragile the veneer of respectability truly is.
