In 1969, nine‑year‑old Caro lives on a pig farm with her parents and five siblings. Curious about the world, she turns to prayer because her devout Catholic father can’t explain modern advances and her mother is too busy for philosophy. At school she learns humanity will soon walk on the moon, a prospect that terrifies her as she believes God would not allow anyone so close to Heaven. Overwhelmed, her father begins drinking. While preparing for her first communion, Caro makes a pact: she will overcome her fear of swimming if he swears to stay sober.
