During a joyride with their headlights off, two men run over and kill a driver carrying a satchel of cash. They take the money, dump the body in a pond and hide the cash in a coal pile. The next morning police find the corpse of 12‑year‑old blind girl Melody in a nearby warehouse. Investigators learn the kidnapper saw Melody’s father bring the ransom and also witnessed the hit‑and‑run, tying the murders to the stolen money.
