During Nero’s last years, Roman officer Marcus Vinicius obsesses over Lygia, a young Christian he tries to enslave. Her protector, the burly Ursus, fights to save her. Vinicius follows her to a secret catacomb prayer led by the apostle Peter, awakening his conscience as Nero orders Rome to burn. Guazzoni’s epic paved the way for later Italian spectacles, influencing Cabiria and Intolerance.
