Klava and Seryozha have known each other since preschool. Seryozha, a top student, has long loved her but treats her as a pretty face, letting her copy his homework and gifting her his parents’ belongings. As teenagers, Klava rejects him, sensing his shallow affection, and is drawn to Lavrik, another intelligent classmate who seems to value her personality. In despair, Seryozha writes a dramatic suicide note asking others to blame Klava, but he ultimately realizes his melodrama trivializes the real hardships faced by those around him.
