A cat and mouse chase ends when the mouse darts into a pickled‑herring barrel. The cat inhales the fumes, becomes drunk, befriends the mouse and defends it from an alley cat. The mouse takes the cat home, nurses him, but he soon resumes the chase, returning to the barrel and renewing their friendship. Charlie Chaplin gets an uncredited story credit.
