While strolling through Paris, a young American spots a striking woman in a crowd and falls for her instantly, only to lose track of her. Later, seated with friends at an outdoor café, he describes the encounter and—by chance—spots her again. Amused, his friends tease him, and he wagers he can win her affection within thirty days despite having no money.
