A routine military flight Boxtop 22 from Thule into the remote Canadian Northwest crashes, leaving Gulf War veteran Captain John Couch, medical officer Captain Wilma De Groot, and other passengers stranded in a bitter arctic wasteland. Fourteen of the eighteen aboard survive the impact, but the merciless cold endangers the injured Bob and Sue, who cannot be moved to the only campfire. Ground rescue from Alert—just ten miles away—and an air team from Edmonton, an eight‑hour flight, do not arrive until thirty‑two hours after the crash, forcing the survivors into a desperate fight for life.
