After moving from a Southern country vicarage to the industrial town of Milton, Margaret Hale initially misreads the charismatic cotton‑mill owner John Thornton. When the mill workers strike, she sides with them, deepening the clash between her and Thornton. Amid the turmoil their mutual pride gives way to unexpected love.
