Hironoshin, a samurai of the Echigo-Nagaoka clan, finds himself disgraced after a disastrous incident at a party in Edo. During a poetry recital attended by his lord, Tadakiyo, Hironoshin's blunt assessment of a poem as plagiarized provokes a harsh punishment. Stripped of his honor, he's condemned to live as a ‘cat flea picker’, a veiled term for a male prostitute. Accepting his fate, Hironoshin becomes an apprentice to a seasoned flea-picker boss, who believes he’s enacting a subtle form of revenge through this unexpected profession.
