New Moon crosses the sea, where Lieutenant Petroff meets Princess Tanya and they fall in love aboard. In Krasnov, Petroff learns Tanya is engaged to Governor Brusiloff. Disillusioned, Petroff crashes a ball to speak with her; Brusiloff catches him, invents a story about a bracelet, and sends him to Fort Darvaz, where a battle against great odds begins.
