In the climax Laura discovers that the strange black fluid seeping from the villagers’ bodies is not a hallucination but a real, supernatural blood‑like essence tied to a demonic matriarch that her father summoned with dark rites. The matriarch has been using Celia’s body as a conduit, allowing the liquid to grant the villagers a false immortality in exchange for their devotion. When Laura learns that her own overdose actually killed her and that the matriarch revived her only to bind her to this cycle, she is confronted with a choice: become the next source of the cursed sustenance or reject the whole pact.

Celia, desperate to keep the village’s lifeline alive, urges Laura to step into the garden where the matriarch dwells, promising that her sacrifice will preserve everyone’s youth. The village priest, Ken, tries to intervene, but his faith is shattered when Abi—who had been healed by the same dark power—reveals that the matriarch’s gift is the only thing keeping her alive. Instead of submitting, Laura turns on her mother. The remaining villagers, now aged and powerless, watch as their dark well runs dry.

In a final act of defiance, Laura discards the remnants of her past—ripping off her clothes and desecrating the piano that once symbolized her mother’s control—before walking back to the swamp behind the house. There she drowns herself, leaving ambiguous whether she will rise again as the new matriarch or simply end the cycle forever.
