Set in the turbulent year 1848, the film follows an aristocratic Hungarian family as Europe’s political and cultural upheavals strip them of comfort. Determined to preserve their status, they fall victim to illness, syphilis and reckless folly. Director Judith Elek draws a stark parallel between the collapse of 19th‑century Hungarian nobility and the later corruption of Communist ideology.
