Hipólito, a self‑made entrepreneur, climbs the social ladder through unscrupulous means, exploiting Portugal’s turbulence as the monarchy gives way to a republic and later a military regime. After being forced into exile, he returns in 1935, re‑encountering family, friends and lovers, only to become entangled once more in a web of lies and manipulations.
