The story begins amid the 1917 Russian Revolution as General Count Svirsky’s family hides, fearing angry peasants. In this turmoil Svirsky murders the young officer who was courting his wife, Countess Svirska. Loyal despite the betrayal, she flees with him to the French Riviera, where she encounters Henri de Cassel, the uncanny double of her dead lover.
