In California, we are introduced to Abel Turner (Samuel L. Jackson), a man who starts his day amidst the backdrop of a massive wildfire threatening the state. A framed photograph of him and his late wife rests face down on his nightstand, hinting at a troubled past. As Abel gathers his children, Marcus and Celia, for breakfast, he enforces his strict rules, illustrating the challenges of single parenthood after losing his spouse. The children reluctantly leave for school, and it’s here that they spot their new neighbors, Chris Mattson (Patrick Wilson) and his wife Lisa (Kerry Washington), arriving with Lisa’s father. Observing their interactions, particularly Chris, a white man, kissing Lisa, a black woman, Abel’s fury boils. Later that evening, an eerie security light from Abel’s house shines into Chris and Lisa’s bedroom, hinting at the developing tension between the two families.

As a police officer, Abel and his partner Javier ([Jay Hernandez]) investigate a local informant, Clarence Darlington. Their conversations reveal Abel’s internal conflicts, and Clarence bluntly remarks about Abel’s mental state. Meanwhile, a seemingly harmless encounter leads to Abel menacingly holding a gun to Chris’s head, demonstrating his uncontrollable rage and deep-seated prejudices.
